Gorgeous Lead Holder

Absolute stunner. I love the grip. I love that it clicks the lead out rather than slides it out. I just wish we had all the colour options here in Canada that Asia has.

Ampliamente recomendado.

Good lead holder with some *external* quirks.

This is a good pencil. Anyone looking at this probably already knows this. So I will open by riffing on the sharpener situation:It is important to know that the Staedtler 502 Lead Pointer is designed to fit the German Staedtler 780 and 788 Leadholders. Or, rather, it's a traditional design and as such they designed those pencils to be compatible -- they are designs from probably 50+ years ago, so it's hard to know which came first. That said, I imagine it is more-or-less compatible with most traditional slim leadholders.Regarding German/Japanese pencil compatibility: One of the things that has come up in the comments on this product as well as many of the Japanese Staedtler products is that this Staedtler 502 sharpener is not compatible with anything wider than the 780 and that includes being "incompatible" with the popular Japanese 925 25-20 and 925 35-20... you will see that many people discuss how to sharpen those in the reviews. First, I will say, there are many stand-alone 2mm sharpeners. If you really want a standalone sharpener, the Staedtler "egg" or "oval"-shaped sharpener from Japan (513 85DS BK), which fits 2mm and 3mm leads. However, I can tell you, as I literally just used the 502 sharpener to sharpen my 925 25-20. The simple solution is to make the lead flush with the sleeve, then click the pencil 16-20 times, and then thread the pencil into the grinder, and go for it. You will have to experiment on the angle, the longer the lead the sharper the tip. Start at 16 and work to 20 clicks. If it is too long you will likely snap your lead. I can confirm that this works with HB leads; different degrees may have different results. If you want to be 100% certain, then buy a cheap 780 and use it as a sharpening body, or buy the egg sharpener.---As far as THIS product, the 925 25 20 (and the identical 925 35 20), it's very nice. One long-term concern I have is if I will accidentally loosen the Degree ring, but that's a quibble -- I will know what lead I have in there; I'm not buying 5 of these. A quick note is that this is indeed a traditional mechanical pencil feed on the 2mm lead; this is not a clutch style lead-holder, if that makes any difference to you.The external quibble is the sharpener situation, but the 502 works for me, so I cannot detract. Also, finally, with these aluminum 925s, people complain about the clacky noises making it sound cheap. I have great news -- it's NOT cheap and loose, it's not the internals, and it's not falling apart. This is a small quirk is the cap, which IS aluminum not plastic, sitting on the lead tube and swaying. It causes a bit of a noise and a bit of bit of a vibration when writing. So no, you shouldn't have to fix this, but the good news is that it's super duper easy to fix. Pull the cap off, and put the tiniest little 5mm^2 square of masking tape or something on the bottom border of the cap (which will be hidden inside the pencil). It will make no more noise, function fine, and strangely, being more rigid, improves the perceived heft of the pencil and makes it feel even better.
