I can spread it out 55 inches and it is stable.

The screen is made of wood and paper, so I believe it is flammable.

Q: Is the white material shiny solid sheet of plastic? Or is it more like a soft fabric? What is the material used?

No, the white material is not plastic. It's more like a good stiff fibery paper. The whole thing -- frame and "paper" -- is quite classy looking, and while it probably wouldn't be great in a home with a rowdy child or dog, it's definitely sturdy enough. I bought it to give myself a sense of separation in a room without a door, but now we think the room actually looks better with it.

Q: do hinges fold 180 degrees or 360 degrees?

180 degrees is my opinion because the panels come folded as one and then it opens as shown in the picture. I am very happy with my purchase.
