A joy to write with - more like the excellent American pencils of yesteryear
I discovered Mitsu-bishi pencils a few years ago and instantly fell in love with them. The writing experience is smooth as the lead glides across the page almost like pencil costing many more times the cost of these pencils (looking at you, Blackwing, you pricey other woman I can't let go) I try to have a box of these pencils, buying more when I run low. I tend to give them out to artist friends who have not experienced the quality of these pencils. They are a fantastic wooden pencil that always seem to sharpen perfectly with great lead at a great price. These Japanese pencils are what you should get if you miss the quality and excellence of American made pencils from years ago. The other 98xx pencils like the 9850 and 9852 are also a joty to write with

Great product
Love the pencils, excellent quality and worth spending a couple of bucks more - Made in Japan speaks for itself even if it something as simple and basic as a lead pencil

Really awesome for students and artists!!
These premium pencils were EXACTLY what I was looking for when upgrading from the cheap yellow ones that don't sharpen well and tend to break. Easily my favorites! I've been buying these pencils year after year for both my note-taking during class and traditional drawing (where consistency is important for value gradation), so I thought to finally leave a review after so long, haha. They glide well, sharpen well (no weird wood splintering, lead is always centered), and are very satisfying to use! Not to mention affordable for the quality: think about all the sharpening hassle and wrist pain you'll avoid... I always keep a couple of my trusty Dark Green Pencils in my backpack alongside my sharpener and eraser. They don't come with erasers, but I actually prefer it that way! You ever use a pencil whose eraser was completely used up or, worse, has a bad one that smears the graphite? Awful. I don't like using those eraser caps either, so these make sure I always have my high quality eraser on hand. (I use the Hi-Polymer Pentel blocks; they erase very cleanly!)

The perfect pencil
These are my favorite pencils, and I'm so glad that I thought to buy them on Amazon. The lead almost never breaks (and I still struggle not to hold my pencils with a death-grip), the pencils sharpen quickly and flawlessly, and the very smooth and consistent writing makes it easy to write for extended periods of time. Perhaps most importantly, writing doesn't smear as easily as it does with other pencils, but despite that they still erase easily.I'm a graduate student studying mathematics (with quite a bit of philosophy along with it), and I've been working up handwritten drafts of both papers and problem sets since I was an undergrad. Now that I've begun doing legitimate research, I can attest to their ability to produce diagrams as well as I could wish. I'm all the more grateful that it's easy to buy writing instruments which make my life so much easier.I never thought that I'd be the sort of person who writes pencil review on Amazon, but I really could not recommend them highly enough.

Good pencils but they don't come with erasers (this is intentional so make sure you know that)
These are nice pencils. They do not come with erasers and need a bit more sharpening than some of the generic No. 2 pencils you find in the US. Remember the HB designation is an equivalent but may not be exact. However, it is well made, feels nice in the hand and is used all the time without problems. These are decent cheap pencils (if you know pencils you know there are far more expensive ones out there) but perhaps entry level is a better word. I'd recommend them to a person looking for something better than Ticeronderoga or the the awful Staples pencils. Whilst these Mistubishi are not our favourite by any stretch of the imagination, they are far superior to the two previous mentioned brands.

Best Value for Handwriters and Casual Drawing
These pencils allow me to create accurate lines for hand written/drawn typography. The Mitsubishi 9800 glides across the paper in a way I have never experienced before. I am sure it's probably better andvmore expensive ones but for me this is a great value for the money. I am still on my first pencil out of 12 and it still seems like I haven't used but a very small amount of the lead. The wood body has a nice shape, it's made from quality wood for pencils. You don't chew a lot off when sharpening.
